3/50 L. P. Hartley 30 December 1895 – 13 December 1972
I think he’s really underrated. Everyone knows the first line of The Go-Between - although I do see it misquoted a lot - but his other books are fantastic too. Although my overall favourite is The Go-Between, which I think captures the atmosphere of summer better than any other book, I also love the Eustace and Hilda trilogy. He understands children well, and all the complexities of sibling relationships. I can’t think of a fictional sister-brother relationship that’s as convincing, or as moving, as Eustace and Hilda’s.
